Configuring form fields to appear in XPath Builder

You can make the fields in XML forms appear in the data tree of the XPath Builder by exposing the data structure that the form uses. To expose the data structure, you can perform one of the following tasks.

Embedding the schema

If you have the XML schema that describes the data that the form collects, you can embed the schema into the form to make the data structure appear in XPath Builder. This way is recommended for exposing the layout of data in a form. LiveCycle ES can extract data embedded in Adobe XML forms, Adobe PDF forms, and Acrobat forms for display in XPath Builder.

To make the fields in XML forms appear, you need to open the form within Designer ES, connect to a schema data source and select the option for embedding the schema into the form. For information about connecting a data source, see LiveCycle Designer ES Help.

Including a schema file

If you have a schema that was used to create the form but was not embedded into the form, you can associate the schema with the variable so that the data structure appears in XPath Builder. The schema file is based on the XML Schema Definition (XSD) defined at http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema. It is recommended that you choose this option for when you use a Form variable.

Including a data file

You can create a schema file from the XML form and include the data in the associated form variable so that the data structure appears in the XPath Builder. To make the fields in XML forms appear, you need to perform these steps. The data file that you include is specified during run time.

To view the form data structure by using a schema file:

  1. In the Variables view, select the variable and click Edit Selected Variable Icon has pencil pointing downward .
  2. In the Variable dialog box, click Schema Settings.
  3. In the Form Schema Settings dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the Select Schema File dialog box, browse to the location of the XML schema file and click Open. The contents of the XML schema file is displayed in the Form Schema Settings dialog box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the Variable dialog box, click OK.

Tip:   To edit a variable, in the Variables view, you can double-click the variable.

To view the form data structure by using a sample data file:

  1. In Designer ES, save the XML form as a dynamic PDF file. For more information, see LiveCycle Designer ES Help.
  2. Open the PDF file in Acrobat Professional, and export the form data as an XML file. For more information, see Acrobat Help.
  3. In Workbench ES, in the Variables view, select the xfaForm variable and click Edit.
  4. In the Variable dialog box, beside the Default Data box, click Browse.
  5. In the Open dialog box, locate and select the XML file you created in step 2, and then click Open.
