PDF packages
New in PDF version 1.7 is the concept of a PDF document as a container for a collection of documents, known as a PDF package (package), which includes metadata to support efficient viewing, sorting, and searching of documents in the package. A PDF document that is not a PDF package (PDF version 1.6 or earlier) may be referred to as a single PDF.
The documents contained in the PDF package are referred to as package files. Preferably, the package files will be PDF documents, which may be accomplished by generating PDF from other document formats beforehand.
The metadata is defined by means of a package specification, which contains a Schema, Display Order and Sort Order. All package files contain basic metadata which exist for file attachments (file name, description, modification date, creation date, and size). Additional customized metadata may be added for Fields specified in the Schema. If a package specification is added to a single PDF, it becomes a PDF package, and any pre-existing document-level file attachments automatically become package files.
There must be at least one page in any PDF document, including a PDF package. The pages of the PDF package are referred to as the cover sheet (though it may be multiple pages). The cover sheet pages are specified the same as the pages of a single PDF. If a cover sheet is not specified when creating a package, a default cover sheet, _AdobeCoverSheet, is used.
For a description of how the new package affects DDX assembly behavior, see Assembly behavior of PDF documents for more details.
For a description of the new elements, see Package for more details.
