UNIX and Linux installation

This section describes how to install JRun on a UNIX or Linux system. If you are running the X Window System, see "To install JRun using the GUI:".

Do not install JRun as root; instead, install it as a JRun user. To install JRun in a root-owned directory, such as /opt, create a directory in which to install JRun, and use chown to make it owned by the JRun user. If you already installed JRun as root, and do not want to re-install, use chown to change the permissions on the files and directories belonging to the JRun user.

Note:   To exit the installation from the command line at any time, type quit.

To install JRun from a command line (default):

  1. Ensure that you installed a JRE version 1.3.0 or later on your computer and that the bin directory of the JRE is in your system PATH environment variable. A JRE version 1.3.0 or later is required for installing JRun.
  2. Set execute permission for the JRun installation shell script, using the following command:
    chmod 755 jrun-40-platform-en.bin 
    
  3. Run the JRun installation script using the following command:
    sh ./jrun-40-platform-en.bin 
    

    If you are installing as root, the following JRun warning appears:

    Installing and running JRun 4 as root is not recommended. You should install while logged in as the non-root user that you want JRun to run as. Type quit to exit install or press enter to continue.

    JRun prompts you to read the license agreement.

  4. Press Enter to view each page of the license agreement.

    JRun prompts you to accept the license agreement.

  5. Enter y to accept the agreement or n to cancel the installation.
  6. Enter the JRun product serial number. A serial number is not required to install the JRun Developer Version. Enter zero to default to the Developer Version.

    JRun prompts you to choose an install folder.

  7. Enter a directory in which to install JRun. This book refers to this directory as jrun_root. The default is /opt/jrun4. Enter an absolute path or press Enter to accept the default location.
  8. JRun prompts you to choose the product features to install. You can select the Complete (default) or a Custom feature set.

    If you select Complete, JRun installs all components. If you select Custom, you have the following options:

    1. Application

    2. Samples applications

    3. Web Server Configuration Tool

    4. Documentation

  9. Enter a comma-separated list of numbers representing the components to install, or press Enter to accept the default (Complete).
  10. Enter a user name for the JRun Management Console (JMC), and press Enter.
  11. Enter a password for the JMC, and press Enter.

    Note:   Make a note of your user name and password. You use them to log in to the JMC.

    JRun prompts you to choose a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) version 1.3.0 or later, on your computer.

    If the default choice is not appropriate, select Choose a Java VM, to select a JVM version 1.3.0 or later on your computer.

  12. To accept the default selection, enter the number for the JVM, or press Enter.
  13. Review the Pre-Installation Summary. Verify that the information is acceptable, and press Enter.

    The JRun installer creates the appropriate directories and extracts the system files. This might take a few minutes.

  14. The JRun Web Server port numbers for the JRun servers appear.
  15. To continue, press Enter.

    The location of the JRun Release Notes appears, jrun_root/readme.htm.

  16. To continue, press Enter.

    You receive confirmation that JRun is installed and its location.

  17. Press Enter to exit the installer.

To install JRun using the GUI:

  1. Execute the JRun installation script using the following command:
    % sh ./jrun-40-platform-en.bin -i gui
    

    If you are logged in as root, a Warning window appears:

  2. Click Next.

    The JRun Introduction window appears:

  3. Click Next.

    The License Agreement window appears:

  4. Select one of the following options:
  5. Click Next.

    The Serial Number window appears:

  6. Enter your JRun 4 product serial number, and click Next.

    If you are installing the JRun Developer Version, leave the field blank (the default).

    The Choose Install Folder window appears:

    Note:   By default, JRun is installed in /opt/JRun4. This book refers to the install directory as jrun_root.

  7. Select an installation folder for JRun, and click Next.

    The following table explains the options:
    Option
    Description
    Complete
    Installs all available options. This includes JRun Application, Sample Applications, Web Server Configuration Tool, and JRun Documentation. Macromedia recommends this option for most JRun developers.
    Custom
    Lets you choose the options you want to install. Macromedia recommends this option for advanced JRun developers.

  8. Select the type of installation, and click Next.

    If you select Custom, the Choose Product Components window appears:

  9. Select the components to install, and click Next.

    The Select a User Name and Password window appears:

  10. Enter a user name and password for the JRun Management Console (JMC). Confirm the password, and click Next.

    Note:   Make a note of your user name and password. You use them to log in to the JMC.

    The JVM Selection window appears:

  11. Select the JVM to use with JRun, and click Next.

    To select a JVM version 1.3.0 or higher, click Search For Others, or Choose Another.

    The Pre-Installation Summary window appears:

  12. Verify that the installation information is acceptable, and click Install.

  13. Click Next.

    The location of the JRun Release Notes window appears:

  14. Click Next.

    The Install Complete window appears. You receive confirmation that JRun is installed and its location.
