Creating Graphics: Draw in Flash

When you draw in Flash, you create vector art, which is a mathematical representation of lines, curves, color, and position. Vector art is resolution-independent; you can rescale the art to any size or display it at any resolution without losing clarity. Additionally, vector art downloads faster than comparable bitmap images. This tutorial shows you how to create vector art of a bolt and logo.

You can print this tutorial by downloading a PDF version of it from the Macromedia Flash Documentation page at www.macromedia.com/go/fl_documentation.

In this tutorial, you will complete the following tasks:

Draw a polygon
Rotate the shape
Use the cutout feature
Transform the shape of your drawing
Copy strokes
Draw with the Line tool
Select and add a different fill color
Group the shape
Create a logo with the Pen tool

First, you'll open the start file for the lesson and set up your workspace to use an optimal layout for taking lessons.

  1. To open your start file, in Flash select File > Open and navigate to the file:

    NOTE

The Draw in Flash folder contains completed versions of the tutorial FLA files for your reference.

Flash opens in the authoring environment.

  2. Select File > Save As and save the document with a new name, in the same folder, to preserve the original start file.

As you complete this lesson, remember to save your work frequently.

  3. Select Window > Workspace Layout > Default to configure your workspace.

The drawing tools in Flash Pro 8 seem much more extensive than the tutorials suggest. It would be nice to see them explored in more detail here.

Step 3 on this page is incorrect. The default workspace layout does not include the Help panel. Do not use the default workspace layout for doing tutorials. If the Help panel becomes hidden, press F1 to display it.

"You can print this tutorial by downloading a PDF version of it from the Macromedia Flash Documentation page at www.macromedia.com/go/fl_documentation." Please note that this link now points to Flash CS3 documentation, where this tutorial is no longer available. You can access Flash 8 documentation PDF files here instead: http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/flash/documentation.html, or you can click the "next" and "previous" arrow buttons at the top of this page to access each page of this tutorial.
