Allocate RAM to Photoshop

Photoshop displays the RAM available to Photoshop and the ideal range of RAM for Photoshop (a percentage of the total available RAM) in Performance preferences.

In Performance preferences, enter the amount of RAM you want to allocate to Photoshop in the Let Photoshop Use text box. Alternatively, drag the slider.

Hi,
I've currently got 4GB of DDR2 RAM on board an XP OS & although I have 3.5MB available for applications, Photoshop CS3 will only allow me to use up to half of it (1.7MB) for memory usage - why is that limitation in place? Can it be lifted for greater affect ?

I have recently installed 4GB of DDR2 RAM on my MacPro which already
has 1GB of RAM, but Photoshop CS3 could only recognize 3072 MB as
an available RAM. What should I do to make Photoshop read the
remaining amount of RAM?

Windows XP normally only addresses 2 GB of RAM. To learn how to extend this to 3 GB, Google "Windows 3GB switch."
