Lightroom
uses the same naming options for importing, renaming, and exporting
photos.
Custom Name (x of y)
Names the auto-imported photos using a custom name, followed
by sequential numbers in relation to the total number of photos
being imported. For example, 1 of 10, 2 of 10, 3 of 10, and so forth.
Custom Name - Original File Number
Names the auto-imported photos using a custom name, followed
by the photos’ original filenames.
Custom Name - Sequence
Names the auto-imported photos using a custom name, followed
by sequential numbers starting with the number you specify.
Custom Name
Names the auto-imported photos using a name you specify.
Date - Filename
Names the auto-imported photos using the creation date, followed
by the photos’ original filenames.
Filename - Sequence
Names the auto-imported photos using the photos’ original
filenames, followed by sequential numbers starting with the number
you specify.
Filename
Names the auto-imported photos using the photos’ original
filenames.
It would be good to see details of the differences between Import, Image and Sequence numbers in the file naming functionality within the image import process.

When renaming files with name involving a number sequence, is there any way of choosing the number of digits involved in the sequence? Starting with the number 1 - as opposed to 0001 - causes sequence problems with other programmes which sequence file names differently. Photoshop offers that choice.

1. Select the photos and choose Library > Rename Photos. 2. Choose Edit from the File Naming pulldown menu. 3. Specify an option from the Sequence and Date section.

Can MetaData presets be used as part of a custom filename during autoimport?
i.e can I specifiy the job identifier in the metadata presets, and then add a sequence number to the job identifier to make it the name of the auto imported file?

No, metadata presets can't be used as you describe. However, you could simply type in the job identifer in the Filename Template Editor, then insert a sequence number token, to import photos with the naming scheme you're trying to achieve.

Please help define the difference between "Image number", "Sequence number" and "Total number".
"Sequence number" is fairly obvious in that the rename dialog then presents a "Start number" field.
"Image number" and "Total number" are a bit more ambiguous.
Some cameras will embed a unique image number in each photo's metadata. Is that "image number"?
And is "Total number" the number of photos that have been imported into the catalog?

I'd like to second richardlawler's question.
In the Filename Template Editor
What is the difference between:
Import# Image# Sequece# Total#
When I'm shooting and importing images into Lightroom, I'd like to give them a name like this:
paris_20080712_001
with the 001 representing the total number of shots taken that day. I don't mind if I have to reset the total number every day, but I don't want to set it every time I put a card in the card reader (the Bridge importer remembers the number of the last image imported). I could use the camera generated number instead of the "001" but then shots done with different cameras would be separated.
