I want to export my dngs directly to my dvd burner, but it doesn't work. THere doesn't seem to be a clean way to back my photos up to dvd inside lightroom, where I would prefer to manage it.

Does Lightroom have archiving ability like the Photoshop Elements organizer? I want to be able to put full files on disc and leave thumbnails in the Lightroom library... which can prompt me to get the original file from the named 'offline' disc if needed.

Lightroom works differently from the Photoshop Elements organizer. Lightroom won't prompt you to get the photo from an offline disk; instead, it will just show a question mark in the photo icon, and not allow you to use the Develop module until you manually locate the image. This might work for you, but the process may be more nuanced than what you're accustomed to with Elements. Try testing the process with a few images, and see how it works.

In Lightroom, you're better off using an external hard drive with read/write capabilities. DVDs are better for archiving photos.

When i export my foto's to jpeg (max. resolution, max. size) they appear much darker i.e. with higher contrast and with more saturated colors both in Faststone Image Viewer and Picasa. I am really disappointed by this, because i love viewing my pictures in Faststone, especially because you can zoom in while playing a slideshow.

Export the photos and use the For E-mail preset. For more info, see http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/1.0/WSB50E4EE7-7682-4baa-8147-F2989275FD9B.html.
