Importing photos

Importing photos into the Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom™ library is the first step in working with your photos. You can import photos directly from a camera, memory card reader, or other storage device.

When I import NEF files (Nikon RAW files) that I shot in b&w they automatically import as color images. How do I avoid this to keep my originally beautiful b&ws?

Lightroom ignores in-camera settings applied to RAW photos when it imports them. However, you can apply a general grayscale or creative black-and-white preset when you import your photos. Or you can convert and edit them in the Develop module.

When importing RAW files to Lightroom, the Adobe adjustments are automatically applied. Usually the image exposure is pushed up as well as the brightness. I have to manually back out everything to get the photo back to its original look. How can I turn these auto adjustments off so I don't have to continually readjust my image to get it back to the original state?

I have the same issue: when I shoot with my Canon 5D in raw B&W,
Lightroom reverts to color. That's very frustrating, as the Canon 5D allows
different variations of black and white in camera: that's a great time saver
and often an artistic decision: why would Lightroom forces me to recreate it?
Can't that be fixed? Could that not be a preference choice, to leave the Raw
file as shot?
