Photoshop Lightroom

Locate missing photos

In the Grid view, Lightroom displays alerts in image cells when photos are moved offline. If photos are moved within a volume, Lightroom usually tries to update the file paths. If you’re deliberately organizing and managing your catalog with the photos offline, ignore the alerts. However, if you need to locate the photos, for example, to apply develop settings and have them written to XMP, do the following:

  1. In the Grid view, click the Question icon in a thumbnail cell.

An alert dialog box opens with the original file path.

  2. Click Locate to navigate to the photo.

To locate missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library > Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.

Note: A red folder name in the Folders panel indicates that the link to the master catalog folder is broken. Right-click (Windows) or Ctrl-click (Mac OS) on the red folder name and choose Locate Missing Folder to restore the link.

Is there any way of selecting photos that show as missing in the grid view? I've used another program to select and remove a load of image that were in Lightroom, so now I need a way of cleaning up Lightroom's database so I can work on the ones that are left.

I found how to select the missing photos now - top left in Grid view, under Quick Collection & Previous Import. The option only shows when LR detects missing pics.

I asked a similar question in a different part of this 'LiveDoc'. Can Lightroom do the job of moving images offline and remember what disc the original files were burned to?
No screen name said on Jul 3, 2007 at 11:38 AM :
Lightroom doesn't remember which disc (CD or DVD) an image is burned to. If you move an image to a CD or DVD, a question mark icon appears next to the thumbnail image in Lightroom. You can click this icon to locate the source file, but you won't be able to use the Develop module to edit the image. For best results, use DVDs and CDs for archiving images, and use a hard drive (internal or external) for images that you're still working on.

Is there a batch way to locate lots of missing folders when I move my photo folders from Hard Disk A to Hard Disk B?
Anita Dennis said on Sep 4, 2007 at 10:13 AM :
Just select the highest level folder when you locate missing folders. Lightroom will find all subfolders.

I've hit the same issue, lots of missing files after changing a drive letter. LightRoom version 1.3 for Windows: How do I select a top level folder for missing files? On most menu options such as importing files I can select a top level folder (or multiple folders) and press choose selected. However, for the find missing file I have to pick a specifc file. Once selected lightroom will find all the missing files in the same folder. How can I select a top level folder?

my mac hard disk is too full of photos. I want to move the whole lot to a new
external drive. Any thoughts on how to do it without all of the files going
"missing" in Lightroom?

Yes. Go here for links to two tutorials on this topic: http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/display/LR/Create+and+manage+catalogs+-+Learn+More.

i've moved a number of photos from my computer to my external hardrive. I did not use lightroom to do it.
now i can't re-establish the link to the photos in their new locations.

I have the same problem as above - I have transferred thousands of photos in dozens of olders onto an external hard drive attached to my PC, and of course Lightroom now regards these as "missing". I understand how I can get Lightroom to "locate" each individual photo, but how do I restore the missing photos in bulk, ie without having to restore each one individually, when all that has changed is the drive they are on?
