About preferences and defaults

Preferences include settings such as panel positions, measurement options, and display options for graphics and typography. Preference settings specify how InDesign documents and objects behave initially.

Default settings are used for every new document or object you create. For example, you can specify the default font and other type specifications for all new documents or text frames.

Numerous program preferences and default settings are stored in the Adobe InDesign preferences files, called InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData. Both of these defaults files are saved each time you exit from InDesign.

Note: InDesign preference settings are fully scriptable. To share a consistent set of preferences across user groups, develop a script to set the preferences, and then have all users in the group run the script on their computers. Don’t copy and paste one user’s preferences files onto another computer, as doing so might cause application instability. For more information about scripting, see the Scripting Guide on the InDesign CS3 DVD.

The only “InDesign SavedData” file I find on my hard drive is located in
~/Library/Preferences/InDesign/Version 4.0
I tried deleting this folder, and it had absolutely no effect on InDesign
CS3, which would indicate that none of the settings in the "Version 4.0”
folder are being read by version 5.
So, where are the various resource settings for InDesign CS3 being
stored? This is important information for users to know, should they ever
wish to delete preferences, and restore only some settings.

In InDesign CS3, the InDesign SavedData file is located here on the Mac:

[YourHardDrive] > Users > [YourUserName] > Library > Caches > Adobe InDesign > Version 5.0.

And here on the PC:

C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 5.0\Caches

Directories like Application Data and Local Settings are hidden by default on the PC, to see these you will need to “Show Hidden Files and Folders”. To do this go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files and Folders.

I am using InDesign CS3 with MS Vista and I want to re-establish the original default settings for preferences. I cannot find where the InDesign Default and Active Workspace.xml files are located. There does not appear to be any Documents and Settings file.

See the "Set defaults" topic for info on restoring preference settings. Here's what it says in a nutshell:

(Windows) Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

(Mac OS) While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

I sometimes need to force quit inDesign or it crashes (CS3 on a G5 imac)
when I restart the program, InDesign resets to default preferences and I
need to set them up to my liking again.
Does anyone know if there is some way I can save my preference settings
and use this file to make it my permanent default?
Bob - Adobe Writer said on May 17, 2008 at 7:59 PM :
Rename the "InDesign Defaults" file. When you have to reset your preferences, you can delete then replace the InDesign Defaults file.

After trashing/resetting my InDesign Preferences, I reset them as needed.
Then, I immediately duplicate the file (Bob - Adobe Writer refers to its
location below) and keep it (along with other important stuff) in a
folder/directory on my back-up drive named "!!Critical_Backup!!.
When my prefs become corrupted, I replace them with my clean, freshly-
made file.

Hope this helps,

Ron

One more thing:
Take a few minutes to learn how to save each of your print presets, because
you will lose those, too, if you reset InDesign's prefs.

Once you've saved them, you can re-load them.
Saves tons of time.

When I export as an eps out of CS2 or CS1 into a hot folder to make a pdf, the ensuing pdf comes out at the same size as the Indesign pasteboard (which is what I want it to do....)

When I do the same out of CS3, the pdf comes out as an 11 x17 (my default page size) with my pdf stuck down in a corner.

Is there a setting to make InDesign send the eps the same size as the pasteboard?

Tks...

I have a problem: each time I enter ID and set the preferences, then exit the application and re launch it I have still the original, unmodified settings...this is making me crazy as each time I need to set units and increments to mm instead of picas...
Help seems to say preferences saving should be automatic each time the application exits...
Is there a way to change settings by editing the default settings file?
I tried but couldn't find where in the file the units and increments prefs are stored.
Anyone can help?

In some instances, changing preference settings applies only to the open document. In such instances, close all documents, and then change the preference settings. If that doesn't work, add another comment.

That works! Many thanks. Nicola

Hi,

I have CS3, I use it on a PC (XP), and it keeps "freezing" when I try to
either "Save As" or "Export" from Indesign or Photoshop. I have to
force quit by Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I tried deleting the preferences but nothing. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Michelle

Hi all.
Which application settings are stored in InDesign SavedData?
If I am deleting the Cache folder Adobe InDesign only two things are forgotten by InDesign (as far as I now): Which short Cut Set was used, and the settings of Quick Apply.
Any further knowledge anywhere?
The thing is: Deleting the Cache folder seems to be a very good solution to reset an instable InDesign. Very often then it is not necessary to delete InDesign Defaults.
