Styles you create appear only in the current document. If no document is open, the styles you create will appear in all new documents.
Why is it so difficult to find out how to set a style as the default style? I would
think that would be a pretty basic function lots of designers and typesetters
need. For some reason, my default style is color indented bullets. I don't
want that. I want "normal", however, that seems to be impossible.
I have found quite a few instanes in CS3 where the simple, what should be
obvious, directions just aren't there.

Setting the default style is the same as setting other defaults. To set the default style for a document, make sure nothing is select and click the style you want to use as the default. To set the default style for all new documents, close all documents and click the style. No screen name said on Nov 25, 2008 at 9:29 AM :
When I try to add a keyboard shortcut to a character style, it doesn't let me enter any information at all. Is there something I am missing? No screen name said on Dec 2, 2008 at 12:30 PM :

Same problem here. Why can't I enter a shortcut for a para/char style?

I am going bonkers as well trying to add a shortcut to a character style in InDesign CS3. It won't let me enter anything into the field EXCEPT for Option ~ or Option u or Option i. Unfortunately the moment I move to another field or press OK, it disappears ?!
Any solutions?
Initially I was hoping to find a way to select non-linear/vertical text or even selecting multiple lines of text because I have created an 80 page document filled with data tables created with tabs. I need to bold one column of text but since the tables are created with tabs it's such a meticulous job!!
