Browse and apply text animation presets as you would any other animation presets.
The text animation presets were created in an NTSC DV 720 x 480 composition, and each text layer uses 72-point Myriad Pro. Some preset animations move the text on, off, or through the composition. The animation preset position values may not be appropriate for a composition that is much larger or smaller than 720 x 480; for example, an animation that is supposed to start off-screen may start on-screen. You may need to adjust the text animator’s position values.
If the text isn't positioned as expected or the text disappears unexpectedly, adjust the text animator's position values in the Timeline panel or Composition panel.
After you apply a 3D Text animation preset, you may need to rotate the layer or add a camera to rotate around the layer to see the results of the 3D animation.
Text animation presets in the Paths category automatically replace the source text with the preset's name, change the font color to white, and may change other character properties.
The Fill And Stroke category of animation presets contains presets that may change the fill color and stroke properties of the preset that you apply. If the animation preset requires a stroke or fill color, the animation works only if you have assigned one to your text.
You can download additional animation presets that take advantage of per-character 3D text animation from the Adobe After Effects Exchange: www.adobe.com/go/learn_ae_cs3additionalanimationpresets.
Here's a preset that will ensure that you animate vertical scrolls at the correct speed (for SD NTSC and SD PAL) to avoid flicker:Jonas Hummelstrand said on Nov 20, 2007 at 6:33 AM :

Please add the Text Animation Preset Gallery to LiveDocs, otherwise it's hard to say to people that LiveDocs is superior to the built-in Help.
Also, we're having trouble with Help Center 2.0 in out deployment of AE 7.0.1, so having the Text Animation Preset Gallery here would have helped us a lot.

Thanks for the feedback, Jonas. The gallery isn't in After Effects CS3 Help at all; it's not in in-product Help or in Help on the Web. Installing and maintaining that gallery was a lot of work, and the gallery significantly decreased performance of the Help Center application. Since people have another way to preview the presets (using Bridge), we decided to cut the in-Help gallery in favor of doing other illustrations in Help.
The animation preset galleries for After Effects 7 are still here:

Someone mistakenly incremented the version number to 'CS3'. This gallery for After Effects 7 does not exactly match what's installed with After Effects CS3.
