Importing and exporting sites

With Dreamweaver you can export a site as an XML file and import it back into Dreamweaver. This enables you to move sites between machines and product versions or to share with other users.

Tip: It's a good idea to export your sites regularly so that you have a backup copy if anything happens to the site.

To export a site:

  1. Select Site > Manage sites.

The Manage Sites dialog box appears.

  2. Click the Export button.

The Export Site dialog box appears.

  3. Browse to and select a location to save the site.
  4. Click Save.

Dreamweaver saves the site as an XML file, with an STE file extension, in the specified location.

  5. Click Done to close the Manage Sites dialog box.

To import a site:

  1. Select Site > Manage sites.

The Manage Sites dialog box appears.

  2. Click the Import button.

The Import Site dialog box appears.

  3. Browse to and select a site (saved as an XML file) to import.

Note: You must export the site from Dreamweaver, which saves the site as an XML file, before you can import the file.

  4. Click open.

Dreamweaver imports the site, then the site name appears in the Manage Sites dialog box.

  5. Click Done to close the Manage Sites dialog box.

It'd be great if there was a way to easily export/import multiple sites in Dreamweaver. We're getting new PCs at work and I have to export 50+ sites and then re-import them all one by one

The ability to export and import multiple sites at the same time is included in Dreamweaver 8.

i have managed to export a load of sites because i'v a new PC however when importing them, on each of the 70+ sites importing it asks for the new local root directory and image directory - surely that defeats the object of importing in the first place!?

Exporting/Importing sites using Dreamweaver does not create new directories on your hard drive. The import feature only imports site settings (for example, FTP information, passwords, etc.) The local directories (even if they're empty) already need to be on the computer for you to import the site. If you've transferred directories and files over to your new computer, then they should already be there. If you haven't, you'll need to create them.
