Set up your project files

When you create a local site, you can place any existing assets (images or other pieces of content) in the local site's root folder (the main folder for the site). Then when you're ready to add content to your pages, the assets are there and ready for you to use.

The sample files included with Dreamweaver contain assets for the sample website you'll build using these Getting Started with Dreamweaver tutorials. The first step in creating the site is to copy the sample files from the Dreamweaver application folder to an appropriate folder on your hard disk.

  1. Create a new folder called local_sites on your hard disk.

For example, create a folder called local_sites in either of the following two locations:

  2. In Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\My Documents\local_sites
  3. On the Macintosh: Macintosh HD/Users/your_user_name/Documents/local_sites
  4. Locate the cafe_townsend folder in the Dreamweaver application folder on your hard disk.

If you installed Dreamweaver to its default location, the path to the folder is as follows:

  5. In Windows: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Tutorial_assets\cafe_townsend\.
  6. On the Macintosh: Macintosh HD/Applications/Macromedia Dreamweaver 8/Tutorial_assets/cafe_townsend.
  7. Copy the cafe_townsend folder into the local_sites folder.

The cafe_townsend folder is the folder that you will use as the root folder (main folder) for your Dreamweaver site.

How do I 'Copy' the 'cafe-townsend' files tothe 'local sites folder , when I opened it how do I save it,?

Open the Tutorial_assets folder, right click the cafe_townsend folder, and select Copy. Then paste the cafe_townsend folder in the local_sites folder you created above.

You can also simply drag the cafe_townsend folder to the local_sites folder, rather than copy it, but this actually moves the folder. We tell you to copy the folder so that you will always have the original files in their original location as a backup.

I'm reading the Beginners documentation, "Set up your project files" and I am unable to find the tutorial_assets folder where I am supposed to find the cafe_townsend folder. I'm using the 30 day trial version. Where should I look?

If you installed to the default location, you should be able to find the files here:

C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Tutorial_assets\cafe_townsend\

I'm with the previous guy - I could not finish the tutorial at one time and
now I cannot find it. What is up with that?

In trying to work through the Café Townsend tutorials in the book (Studio 8), some of the files are missing from the Assets folder. I installed Dreamweaver to its default location. The Fireworks Assets folder only contains ONE file, "Homepage-mockup". I need the individual components of that page.
