On Mac OS X. Set a TextField to be Input or Dynamic. Set it to multiline.
There will be a carriage return in the TextField without any user input. (Get
the length of the text or trace out the text surrounded by '*'.)

On Windows, the same TextField is empty when created.

Reported as bug, also.

The text's "leading" is not set up the way that you would traditionally expect.
Currently it adds additional pixels between the lines of text, defaulting at 0 (no space added). Usually leading takes into account the size of the text, so a line of text at 16pt and a leading of 16pt would have the same effect as this 0 setting.
So if you have a 16pt text and want a little space between lines you would set the leading to 2, not 18 as normal.
Of course it still doesn't look the way it should, so play around and don't be afraid to use negative values!

It seems to be undocumented above, but apparently the moment you set embedFonts to true, getCharBoundaries(int) starts returning null instead of valid rectangles. Hopefully, this note will save someone else some time.

I have had some problems with the alpha property on fonts and I came to the following conclusion: In order to use embedFonts you also need to create and reference (export for ActionScript) a font symbol. Anyway, I found a trick by mistake (or maybe it's not really a trick). If you change the blendMode to something else that NORMAL, the alpha will work
For example I got what I needed without using embedFonts by just setting myText.blendMode = BlendMode.LAYER;
Hope this helps some of you and I also hope sometime in the future AS will be better documented.

The documentation for TextField does not mention that you have to embed the font on the text field to have setting the alpha property have an effect.

After setting the TextFormat on the TextField, setting the embedFonts property on the TextField is necessary but not sufficient.

Example - specify that the Verdana font is to be used on the TextField

import fl.transitions.Tween;
import fl.transitions.easing.*;

var format:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
var tf:TextField;

format.font = "Verdana";
format.color = 0x000000;
format.size = 10;

tf = new TextField();
tf.setTextFormat(format);
tf.embedFonts = true; // this is necessary but one more step is required

addChild(tf);

tf.x = 10;
tf.y = 10;

new Tween(tf, "alpha", Elastic.easeOut, 0, 0.5, 10, true);

You also have to create a text field on the stage using the Flash authoring environment using the same font and click on "Embed ...".

If your wondering how to get a TextField reference by name you might need a function/method like this:

function getTextField(scope:Sprite, name:String):TextField
{
var target:DisplayObject	= scope.getChildByName(name);
var returnTarget:TextField	= TextField(target);
return returnTarget;
}

Adjust as needed (MovieClip instead of Sprite, etc.). Don't bother trying to shorten up that process. You'll only end up pulling your hair out.

Hi, hello, i am just wondering a few things:

1) when i add a img tag to my TextField and then assign an EventListener to this new object in IE 6 the EventListener doesn´t work but in Opera it work just fine.

2)When adding new img tags the previous img tag loses its listeners why?

3)Not sure if it is my code, but the third img tag causes flash to create an error why?

getLineLength() and other text masurement functions not always get proper results. If you put some text in a textfield, and after that you set the textfield's wordWrap property to true, you still get the line length as if the text wasn't wrapped. To get the proper getLineLength() of such a wrapped text, you have to set the wordWrap=true property, and after that put the text in the textfield.

Example 1: bad behavior:

var myText:String="A string somewhat too long to fit in the textfield";
var tf:TextField=new TextField();
tf.width=80;
tf.height=16;
tf.text=myText;
tf.wordWrap=true; //wordWrap set after the text is put in the textField

trace(tf.getLineLength(0));
// according to getLineLength() there is only 1 whole line of string,
// which is 50 characters long in spite of the wordWrap=true
// (still, the text in the textfield got wrapped correctly,
// only the getLineLength() got wrong)

Example 2 (slightly changed): good behavior:

var myText:String="A string somewhat too long to fit in the textfield";
var tf:TextField=new TextField();
tf.width=80;
tf.height=16;
tf.wordWrap=true; //wordWrap set before the text is put in the textField
tf.text=myText;

trace(tf.getLineLength(0));
// this time getLineLength() got the correct result
// the first line ot the wrapped string is 9 characters long,
// and the rest of the string got to the following lines of the textfield
