If you set the returnType of a Web Service to struct, and the ColdFusion structure you return contains a ColdFusion array, you get a java.lang.ClassCastException. Apparently, in a Web Service, returntype='struct' means a structure of simple types, such as strings.

In DreamWeaver 8 when you select the tag (shift-F5) for editing, you can edit the attributes for the tag from a dialog window. However, the attributes for Description and Hint are swapped in this dialog window.

If you feel comfortable editing the DW configuration files, you can correct this flaw in DW8 by editing the following file:

<drive>:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\TagLibraries\CFML\cffunction.htm

At the end of this file, you'll need to fix (swap back) the id= and attname= attributes of the input tags named 'thedesc' and 'thehint'.

When using cffunction with returntype="string", you should also set output="false". Otherwise you get a strange space as first char of your return.

http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=952492&highlight_key=y&keyword1=cffunction

If you attempt to reference a variable within the "hint" property of <cffunction> within a CFC, coldfusion not only refuses to run the CFC, it provides no error or diagnostic message that explains the problem. All you get is a cryptic "500 null" message.
