Note there are certain Windows OS's that don't come with a default JRE so you may need to download on of the ones listed in the above system requirements. Without a JRE applet rendering in the CF Admin may cause an error. See this tech doc for more details:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/coldfusion/ts/documents/admin_jre.htm

"By default, a JVM is not included with Windows Server 2003, the original version of Windows XP, or Windows XP SP1a, but the Microsoft VM may be present on these systems if you upgrade over a previous version of Windows that included the Microsoft VM, or if the Microsoft VM was installed by a third party."

A few more clarifications. MDAC is only required if you are using the ODBC Type III database drivers or the Unicode/Access database driver.

From the MSVC runtime, you also need msvcrt.dll.

Runtime modules should be in the windows\system32 directory (this might also be named WINNT\system32).

After you install the Visual C++ 6.0 runtime components, you must manually copy msvcp60.dll from the install directory to the system32 Directory.
