Grouping and moving icons

If you have a flowline with several icons related to the same activity, such as an introduction, or a specific interaction, you can group them all in a map icon. You can either start with a map icon and add the icons needed for the activity to the flowline in the map icon, or you can drag an empty map icon to the flowline, and then copy and paste the related icons into the map icon.

To group icons in a single map icon:

  1. Select all the icons on the flowline you want to group.
  2. Select Modify > Group.

A map icon is created containing all the icons you selected. You can then title it.

You can also drag an empty map icon to the flowline, and then add icons to the flowline within it.

To group icons in an empty map icon:

  1. Drag a map icon to the flowline.
  2. Open the map icon.

    A flowline is displayed.

  3. Add icons to the flowline within the map icon.

As you design your piece, you may decide that it is not helpful to have the icons you placed in a map icon together.

To ungroup the icons in a map icon:

  1. Select the map icon.
  2. Select Modify > Ungroup.

The icons are displayed in the parent flowline.

You can temporarily group icons, so you can conveniently move them, and then ungroup them after they are moved.

To move several icons:

  1. Group the icons.
  2. Drag the map icon to the new location.
  3. Select Modify > Ungroup.

Sometimes, even with map icons, it is difficult to keep track of the various levels of the flowline. You can have map icons within map icons within map icons. A map icon that contains another map icon on its flowline is called a parent map. A map icon within the parent map is called a child map. Your Design window can become a maze of maps and flowlines.
