Using the Control Panel

Use the Control Panel to restart, reset, stop, pause, and play a piece. The Restart, Reset, Stop, Pause, and Play buttons work the same as the commands on the Control menu. For more information, see Running and pausing a piece.

Running segments of a piece

The Restart from Flag and Reset from Flag buttons work the same as the commands on the Control menu.

Step over icons

The Step Over button runs the piece and pauses before each icon on the flowline. When stepping over a map icon, Authorware pauses after running all the icons in the map icon. This is especially useful for stepping over portions of a piece that are working properly.

Step into icons

The Step Into button is especially useful for studying interaction and decision icons. For example, if you step into an interaction, the piece enters the interaction and then waits for a response. When one occurs, the flow branches to the icon attached to the response type and pauses before the attached icon.

Generate a list of icons in the order they run

The Trace On button lists each icon's map level, type, and title. The image and name of the next icon that's set to run appear in the area above the list. This is a simple way to find out how the flowline behaves.

Display messages generated by the Trace function

The Trace function displays a specified string in the Control Panel window. This function is useful for tracking what is happening to variables because it reports the values they contain as the piece runs.
